Recently we conducted a dental camp at Ravindra Bharathi Global School Medavakkam. We had an opportunity to screen 400 students at a time. This gave an insight for me to write this post. Frequent questions asked by parents, 'This is just a milk teeth anyhow they are going to fall. Is it mandatory to treat them?'
The milk teeth starts erupting at the age of around 6 months and gets completed by the age of 2 years and it stays in its place till the entire set of permanent teeth comes out. The cavities already present in the milk teeth when left untreated have the maximum chances of affecting the permanent set of dentition because both milk teeth and permanent teeth are in the same oral cavity, also cavities are nothing but a store house for germs and bacteria.
Hence frequent check up with dentist encourages preventive therapy which can avoid any drill and fill approach. The cavities already present can be treated before affecting the permanent or adult teeth which starts erupting at the age of 6 yrs.
Why is Dental health important ?
There is a saying which i heard it from a kid from the camp which her mother used to say
"When your mouth is clean and healthy, Half your body is healthy"
Yes it is absolutely correct as your mouth is the gateway for your body, clean and healthy teeth and gums can keep your body the same way.
What is Preventive Therapy? Is it a genuine treatment or an aesthetic approach, was another question which i encountered very frequently after the students camp from the parents side.
I appreciate this question because as adults only 10% of the population is going for a regular dental check up once a year as a preventive measure. In India, still dental visit is considered only as a last resort. But in most advance countries people go for bi-yearly regular visit to their dentist to check up the teeth and do any preventive treatment.
What are the Preventive measures available for a healthy mouth for Kids?
Even without any treatment, simple brushing twice a day would keep their teeth germs away. Educating the kids to rinse their mouth with water after eating chocolates or any diary or sweet products.
In following blogs we will see few preventive treatment techniques available for kids.
