WHY MAJORITY SAY NO TO REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURES??
In case of you missing one or a few teeth, removable partial denture(RPD) is one among the options your dentists suggest.Basically ,RPD is made up of resin or metal framework with teeth substitutes and clip attachments or suction for retention in your mouth. It has increased advantage of affordability.
Listing the pros,RPD is a simple and affordable option. It can be made in lesser sittings than other options.Esthetically pleasing .No surgery required as in implants. No preparation of adjacent teeth required as in fixed partial dentures.Maintains the space of missing teeth in due time preventing the movements of adjacent teeth.Lesser ill-effect on your jaw-skull joint.
Listing the cons, patients with acceptable oral hygiene can only be indicated for RPD.
CONS AFFECTING YOUR MOUTH:
  •                                    Accumulation of plaque in compromised oral and denture care which is the root of receding gums and further tooth loss
  •                                    Mobility of the adjacent teeth as a result of plaque and other factors
  •                                    Decay of adjacent teeth.Receding gums cause decay in root portion of the adjacent tooth.
  •                                    RPD puts pressure on the underlying bone and promotes bone loss
  •                                    Poor maintainence causes irritation and infection in underlying gums

CONS AFFECTING YOUR PSYCHOLOGY:

  •                                     RPD has poor patient acceptance.Takes time for you to adapt.
  •                                     Retentive clasps may look un-esthetic.
  •                                     Every night removal and cleaning is quite a burden.
  •                                     Confidence level lowers when concerned about retention in your mouth and speech.
  •                                     Potential damage to your mouth in some way is stressful.
  •                                     You must have to be a reliable recall candidate for your dentist

CONS OF THE RPD ITSELF:

  •                                      Low survival rate.
  •                                      Becomes porous on poor maintainence which leads to bad breath.
  •                                      Improperly designed clips leads to mouth sores
  •                                      Susceptible to breakage.
  •                                      Doesnot mask the artificiality completely.
  •

BOTTOMLINE:   All the prosthesis can never be a substitute for a natural teeth. You are missing a teeth and you have compromised status for fixed prosthesis and implants....only then RPD suits the scenario!!!!!
