
THUMB SUCKING is a natural habit found in every kid
WHEN DO KIDS THUMB SUCK?
- At birth ,baby will suck any object placed in its mouth.this is sucking reflex responsible for breast feeding.
- When babies suck on their mothers breast or a bottle,it provides comfort.
- As they grow into toddlers,they continue the sucking habit as a way to comfort themself ,when they are tired,bored or anxious,feared,lack of caring,feeling lonely.
- Sucking on their thumb, finger, pacifier or other objects may make babies feel secure and happy.

most children stop sucking habit on their own between 2 to 3 years of age
WHEN TO WORRY???
6 years its the time for the permanent teeth to erupt.So kids should permanently stop their sucking habit by the age of 5 years.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE HABIT CONTINUES BEYOND 3 YEARS???
Once the permanent teeth starts erupting ,it may affect the shape of the oral cavity and dentition,then probably your child will land up in situation of wearing braces
The intensity of dental problem depends on the intensity of sucking
- kids who rest their thumb passively on their mouth are less affected
- kids who rest their thumb aggressively on their mouth are more affected

HOW TO STOP THUMB SUCKING HABIT BEFORE THE AGE OF 5 YEARS????
ADA American dental association have provided the following steps to stop thumb sucking habit
- Praise children for not sucking instead of scolding.
- Try getting child under fun activities.
- Make them feel comfortable and give them a secured feeling.
- Dentist could explain them ,"what would happen to their dentition?" if they do not stop thumb sucking.
If the above things does not work out
- Remind your child their habit by bandaging their thumb or thumb guard.
- Wearing sock in their hand at night
