Are Dental Xrays Safe for me?....Who need Xrays???

ARE DENTAL X-RAYS SAFE?

Many parents are worried about the amount of radiation their children are exposed to,As a dental professional, we follow the ALARA (AS LOW AS REASONABLY ACHIEVABLE) rule to minimize the amount of radiation exposure.

WHAT IS DENTAL X-RAY?
RADIOGRAPH LET DENTIST SEE BEYOND THE TEETH
Dental x-rays are used to view parts of teeth, structures of jaw covered by gums, inside the bone
which cannot be seen on clinical examination

  • FILM X-RAY(conventional)
  • DIGITAL X-RAY

LESS RADIATION FOR SAFER X-RAY:

Digital radiography:
  • Digital x-rays use up 90% less radiation than film x-ray.
  • kids will receive much lower radiation than fully grown adult.
  • Digital x-rays are computerized.

RADIATION PROTECTION SHIELD:
(LEAD APRON AND THYROID COLLAR)
ESPECIALLY,IF YOU ARE PREGNANT OR SUSPECT YOU ARE PREGNANT LET DENTIST KNOW IT
You will be covered from neck to knee with the lead lined full body apron and thyroid collar.

Lower x-ray dose:
  • An x-ray machine is quite large but the x-ray comes out of a small cone this limits the x-rays to an area at the range of 3 inch in diameter.
  • X-ray machines are also very well shielded so very little radiation exposure beyond the diameter of the beam.

Limited use of x-ray:

  • Dental professional take x-ray only they when they believe they are necessary for an accurate assessment and diagnosis.

WHO NEED MORE FREQUENT REGULAR X-RAY:

  • Children and teenagers:X-rays helps to track tooth development,if they have lots of decayed teeth,x-rays taken every 6 months to keep in track of permanent tooth development.
  • Smokers:Increase risk of bone loss around the teeth.
  • Adult with many fillings, crowns, bridges or other restoration: X-rays helps dentist find out any decay beneath the filling, below crown or in new place .
  • Dry mouth:Lack of saliva are more prone to decayed teeth and gum disease.
  • Gum disease:Helps to detect the amount of bone loss.
  • Tobacco chewers:Tobacco contains sugar so they are more prone to cavities.
