DENTAL IMPLANTS....AN ESSENTIAL LUXURY!!!

WHICH IS THE BEST DENTAL IMPLANTS IN THE WORLD?

There are lot of companies providing implant.each company have their own literature to support why their design is the best. Its the dentist who decides which type of implant suits your bone condition .

CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING DENTAL IMPLANTS FOR YOU:

1. Your dental implant surgeon is the best person to select your implant

2. Every patients bone is unique : your implant is selected by your dentist based on your bone quantity and quality and not the brand

Your Implant surgeon should have good experience in the field of Dentistry or be a Prosthodontist, Oral Surgeon or PERIODONTIST along with that he/ she should have any of the above ICOI, ISOI etc...

3. You must first realize, that" your bone doesn't know which branded implant is going to be placed".

4.Your bone requires not the branded implant but it requires

  • good surface
Classification based on surface
smooth,machined,textured,coated
  • good design
Classification based on body design,
Thread,cylinder ,solid,hollow or vented,perforated,plateau
  • good material
classification based on material
metallic,ceramic,polymer,carbon compound
  • good length
  • good diameter
  • number of implant to equally distribute the force
---Single tooth missing .
single implant placed

----Multiple tooth missing
There are two options when planning implant treatment for patients.

FIRST OPTION
  • One is to replace every missing tooth with an individual implant and crown.
The hard task of replacing individual teeth in the esthetic zone (anterior, front tooth region) is maintaining or creating the soft tissue architecture (interdental papillae).
The best results occur when inserting implants immediately following extraction, thus preserving the gingival tissue
  • In the posterior zone, where the forces of mastication are highest, individual implants are recommended.
SECOND OPTION
  • The second option is to attach a fixed bridge onto several implants.Implant-supported bridges are for replacing several missing teeth Replacing every missing tooth with an implant and crown may not be possible in every case.
  • . If the patient fails to maintain healthy tissues under bridges and around implants, bone loss, known as periimplantitis, can occur
----Completely missing teeth
  • Two implant overdenture for lower arch
  • Four to six implants overdenture for upper arch
  • If there is no sufficient bone for placement of implant then bone grafting and then implant placement.

HOW WILL YOUR DENTIST SELECT YOUR IMPLANT?

1. Clinical examination,Medical condition
2. Bone quantity and quality
3. Provisional treatment planning(preoperative treatment planning)
4. X-ray----- OPG/ CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) 3D IMAGING
X-ray helps dentist to access bone density, diameter, length, position, width and depth, whether bone grafting/sinus lift  is required before implant placement, whether any anatomical vital structures are interfereing the implant placement
5. FINAL treatment planning and Implant placement.

CLASSIFICATION OF IMPLANT DESIGN
----Endosseous implant
----mini implant

  • They are used to support a denture or temporary prosthesis during healing period following implant surgery.
  • Used in orthodontic procedures to align teeth on temporary basis ,it is placed for six to nine months after which they are easily removed.

-----zygomatic implant
certain patients no longer have adequate bone in the upper jaw
this happens when the patients

  • Wear denture for a long period of time
  • Bone reduction due to cancer
  • Posterior teeth are missing for a long period of time
  • Sinus drops down and only  shell of bone between sinus and oral cavity
if there is sufficient bone in zygoma behind the sinus, in such case dentist can decrease the need for bone grafting and place zygomatic implant.

----subperiosteal implant

STERILIZATION:

Prepackaged sterile implant kit is used.Dental implant surgeries are done under strict sterilization protocol

How do you (as a patient) take care of your Implants:

Infection is the enemy

Bacterial deposit around implants are similar to the teeth but in a more catastrophic way hence care should be taken to keep the region free of deposits.

BFM is the key!!!

  • Brush
  • Floss
  • Mouthwash

If homecare is not proper there are more chances of implant failure as early as a year, also do not skip your dental visit whenever you are advised.
