The bad breath is caused by bacteria,

  • Infrequent and improper brushing and flossing cause tooth decay and gum disease
  • Dry socket
  • Food impaction
  • Oral ulceration ,oral cancer
  • Tongue coating 
  • Fungal infection
  • Bad maintainance of denture
  • Decayed tooth with pus discharge
The bad breathe can also be due to

  • Respiratory tract infection
  • Chronic sinusitis,Tonsilitis
  • Lung infection 
  • Throat infection
  • Stomach ulcer
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Dry mouth
  • Some medication can induce dryness of mouth
  • Tobacco
  • Smoking
  • Food stuffs like garlic,onion,spiced foods
  • Fever and dehydration
  • morning breathe
PREVENTIVE MEASURE:
  • Visit dentist regularly.
  • Teeth cleaning periodically by the dental professional.
  • Proper brushing technique ,brushing twice daily.
  • Using tongue scraper.
  • Flossing after brushing to get rid of food particles struck between the teeth.
  • limited intake of strong odour species like onion ,garlic etc..
  • Limit sugar and caffeine intake.
  • Drink plenty of liquid.
  • Chew sugar free gums when the mouth feels dry.
  • Eat fresh fibrous food.
  • Use of mouthwash as prescribed by the dentist.
  • Don't skip your morning breakfast
  • Clean your denture atleast once a day
DIAGNOSIS
  • Self assesment test:Smelling ones own breathe.

  • Wrist lick test:Person is asked to lick their wrist after 5 sec at a distance of 3 cm they are asked to smell their own wrist.


  • Spoon test:Plastic spoon is used to scoop out material from the tongue,odor is judged by smelling the spoon for 5 sec at a distance of 5 cm.

  • Dental floss test:Floss is left in between the teeth
