A dental abscess is collection of infected material(pus),Opening in the tooth enamel allows bacteria to infect the pulp ,infection can spread out from the root of the tooth, Bacteria from the tooth can extend into the gums, the cheek, the throat, the tissues beneath the tongue or even into the jaw or facial bones.
CAUSE of dental abscess:

Clinical examination by dentist:
- The patient will feel pain when the dentist taps the teeth.
- Sensitive to hot and cold, even exposure to air.
- Biting or closing the mouth tightly also increase the pain ,gums may be swollen and red and may drain pus(drain thick material),due to the pressure within the abscess.
OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM TRIES TO KEEP THEE INFECTION FROM SPREADING ,SO THE PAIN MAY NOT BE PRESENT ,SOMETIMES ABSCESS MAY RUPTURE AND DRAIN ON ITS OWN OR DRAINED SURGICALLY .BUT WHEN THE ABSCESS SPREADS IT MAY LEAD TO COMPLICATIONS.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT??
The goal of treatment is elimination of infection, preservation of the tooth and prevent the complications
- Warm saltwater rinses may be soothing.
- Pain reliever to relieve pain ,fever and antibiotic to fight against infection.
- Surgical drainage of the abscess or
- Removal of the affected tooth or root canal treatment may be recommended,it depends on the condition of your teeth, your dentist will decide if the tooth can be saved or not by clinical examination and by taking X-ray of the affected teeth.
IF LEFT UNTREATED WHAT WILL BE THE COMPLICATIONS??
- Loss of the teeth.
- Spread of infection to the jaw bone.(severe tooth abscess may become large enough to perforate bone and extend to soft tissue)
