                     PREGNANCY DENTAL CARE

It is important to take good care of your teeth and gums while pregnant . Fluctuations in hormone levels during pregnancy causes gum disease which has been linked to preterm birth(born early) and low birth weight.





COMMON DENTAL PROBLEMS DURING PREGNANCY

PREGNANCY GINGIVITIS : It is most common problem in pregnant women. you can notice changes in the color and texture of the gums. Gums become swollen, red,puffy and inflamed due to changes in hormone level(progesterone).Most of the times you may notice bleeding gums while brushing and flossing.Bad breath is also found.It can be rectified by professional  cleaning and proper maintenance of your teeth.

  • PREGNANCY TUMOR : As the name insist it is not a cancer. It is an inflammatory reaction which appears as red lumps that glistens. It is due to the local irritation (food particles,plaque) ,traumatic injury or hormonal changes. Most commonly seen during second trimester of pregnancy(13-27 weeks). Generally it disappears after child birth.However it can be removed in case of discomfort.

  • MORNING SICKNESS AND DENTAL EROSION: Morning sickness is most common in pregnant women. The gastric acid comes during vomiting  are strong enough to cause dental erosion.So it is very important to rinse your mouth with water or fluoride mouthwashes after vomiting. 

  • FOOD CRAVINGS: Pregnant women generally have more desire towards sugary foods. This has a high chance for dental caries formation.So it is better to take food with low sugar content. Try to have a healthy and balanced diet.The more frequent you snack the greater the chance of developing tooth decay.

THINGS TO FOLLOW DURING PREGNANCY

  • Visit your dentist regularly. Don't skip your dental check up simply because you are pregnant.
  • It is very important to inform your dentist that you are pregnant.
  • Tell your dentist the names and dosages of all the drugs you are taking.
  • Have preventive exams and cleaning during pregnancy.
  • Brush your teeth twice daily using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss your teeth daily.
  • Have plenty of healthy foods (fruits,vegetables,whole grains)
  • Dairy products,cheese,yogurt are good for developing baby's teeth and bones.
  • Drink plenty of water especially between meals and snacks.
